Salt River Horses-Spring 2014

Posted on: October 6th, 2014 by Joe No Comments

For almost five years now I’ve been periodically working on a personal photographic project capturing wild horses in the western USA. This past year, I had an opportunity to add to the imagery of the project, documenting the wild horses on Arizona’s Salt River. These horses are surprisingly close to the metropolis of Phoenix, only about an hour’s drive to the east.

I set out with my good childhood friend Chris Ramin to locate these river dwelling ungulates. Loaded down to camp for a couple days we headed east of Phoenix to the Salt River Basin. For many years, this area has been an oasis for the local population looking to cool down and enjoy the outdoors. We arrived in the late afternoon and began our search at the Phon D. Sutton and Coon Bluff Rec area, but came up empty-handed. We headed to our camp spot for the night and got up early the next morning and spotted the horses just a bit further upstream at the the end of Usery Pass Rd, just along the river.

We were stalking along the river, following fresh dung and horse tracks, when the horses emerged, coming right toward us, out of the cactus and scrubland along the basin. We hung out for several hours watching them roll in the rocks, cross the river, graze and mingle.

Enjoy the photos.
