Thao and The Get Down Stay Down

Posted on: February 9th, 2010 by Joe No Comments

It appeared that the entire population of Valencia Street had packed into a sold-out Great American show Friday night to see San Francisco’s own Thao with the Get Down Stay Down. The group’s front woman, Thao Nguyen, pulled off equal parts cute and baddass as she tromped across the stage in her cowboy boots, headbanging her shaggy haircut like she’s possessed, while ripping it up on her enormous guitar. Thao’s on-stage charisma is contagious, and her wild, energetic style feels very San Francisco. Read more here.

Gentry Magazine-Tommy Halvorson

Posted on: February 9th, 2010 by Joe No Comments

For the past six months or so I’ve had the pleasure of being the photographer for The Phoenix Supper Club, a San Francisco based roving dinner club. This month in the South Bay’s Gentry Magazine, one of my photos was used in the telling of Phoenix’s executive chef Tommy Halvorson story. Read more here.

Lucha Libre Wrestling

Posted on: February 1st, 2010 by Joe 1 Comment

If only the real world were like the pro-wrestling world: where divisions between good and evil are clean-cut and the good guys always win (the bad guys may appear to be winning for the majority of the match, but ultimately, good always perseveres in the end). Last night, the roughly 200 fans who showed up for Pro-Wrestling Revolution’s Lucha Libre fundraiser event for John O’Connell High School enjoyed three hours of brawling amongst the clear cut villains (which in last night’s case meant a very aggro trio of Border Patrol agents) and heroes (the mean, lean, well-preened Mexican fighting machines of Universidad de los Guapos) of the pro-wrestling world. Pro-Wrestling Revolution also held their very first women’s title event last night, which was taken by Mexico’s infamous Lady Apache after a gnarly chick fight with San Francisco’s own pro-wrestling champ, Alissa Flash (otherwise known as Cheerleader Melissa). Proceeds from the evening will help fund John O’Connell’s prom. Write up by Anna McCarthy

East Bay Express Story-Bands of Courage and Consequence

Posted on: January 28th, 2010 by Joe No Comments

Story by Rachel Swan
Indie rocker Conan Neutron has colorful ways of describing George W. Bush’s former Deputy Chief of Staff, Karl Rove. He offered a few examples over beers at the Uptown Nightclub: “Master of lies and manipulation.” “A man with blood on his hands.” “Shameless tactician.” “Lying salesman.” “Gandalf behind the scenes.” “Unconscionable, soulless asshole.” That’s only the beginning. Neutron also faults Rove for “all these wars that we’re still embroiled in, our economy being screwed, and gay marriage being used as a wedge issue.” Then there’s that “porcine face,” which, according to Neutron, resists even the softest lighting or the finest airbrushing techniques….Read More

Live Long and Prosper: The SF Star Trek Convention

Posted on: January 26th, 2010 by Joe 2 Comments

An impressive crowd of self-proclaimed Star Trek nerds beamed up to this year’s Star Trek Convention, held over the weekend at San Francisco’s Westin St. Francis Hotel. Day one had a sparser — but definitely no less nerdy — turnout as most devoted fans had come to see Sir Patrick Stewart and William Shatner banter it up together on Sunday. But those who skipped out for Saturday’s events missed some of the best costumes of the weekend, prepared especially for the costume contest. Here are a few characters and highlights from the convention. By Anna McCarthy-Read More….

Here are the best pics of the convention.

Enjoy.

Snuffed Out

by Anna McCarthy

Massive layoffs, internal conflict, and decreasing morale have all contributed to a less effective arson unit.

The Felton Street fire looked suspicious from the start. The two-story house in the Portola District that went up in flames in the early hours of Feb. 5, 2009, had no electricity. Plus, it was vacant. Vacant houses with no electricity typically don’t spontaneously combust. Continued

Transit riders of all sorts from around the world, including those on San Francisco’s BART and Muni, took part in a “no pants subway ride” Sunday. The event first began in New York in 2002 and has now spread to 44 transit systems in 16 countries. For Sunday afternoon entertainment i hustled around the Muni and BART taking pics of scantily clad urbanites. Check out the pics below

East Bay Express Cover shot 12/16

Mid December i had the privilege of shooting the cover of the East Bay Express (along with several of the feature story photos) located in the Bay Area’s Oakland. The story compared and contrasted the waves of coffee movements since the 1950′s and spotlighted several East Bay coffee shops, Berkeley’s Local 123 and Oakland’s SubRosa.

Here’s the story on the East Bay Express site.

I’ve included the rest of the photos from the photo shoot below.

Sf Bike Expo 2009

Posted on: November 22nd, 2009 by Joe 2 Comments

The annual SF Bike Expo took place this week at San Francisco’s Cow Palace. A day of cyclo-cross racing, mountain bike dirt jump competition, bike fashion show and many vendors selling their wares made for quite the cycling enthusiast event.

The cyclo-cross course wound around the massive Cow Palace property, up and down hills, through mazes or dirt and even through one of the buildings to give the riders the ultimate variety of terrains.  The mountain bike dirt jump competition, featuring a variety of pro’s, took off from the side of a good sized hill and continued through 3 massive jumps to provide an awesome aerial spectacle. Check out the pics below.
