SF Weekly Kitchen Ink Cover

I spent a month photographing and researching San Francisco Chef’s w/ tattoos. The project had a variety of difficulties built into it but combating the different lighting scenarios in kitchens around town was most definitely the most difficult aspect of the project. Thanks to Anne, Patrick and Anna for extra help here and there. In the end it was published in a 4-page spread for SF Weekly, a very rare, feature print photo essay.

Turning the Tables

It was a good party, Arash Ghanadan thought: the right girl-guy ratio, a DJ spinning house music, attractive people. He had arrived alone at the loft space on Folsom at about 2:30 one June morning after finishing up a party he had promoted at a SOMA nightclub. It had been a big night across the city, and his industry friends were upstairs, talking about how their events had gone and who had booked the best DJ. Ghanadan was ready to unwind. March 17, 2010 News Feature

On a cool, crystal-clear November morning, the weather is perfect for a run. Outside of Lululemon, a chic athletic apparel shop at the corner of Ashby and College avenues in Berkeley, a crowd starts to assemble on the sidewalk. It’s a colorful spectacle — an ethnically diverse gathering of about 100 runners sporting bright race T-shirts, neon shorts, and shiny white shoes that look like they’ve yet to step in a puddle. I recently shot a series of portraits of Anna McCarthy, a San Francisco based journalist. Focusing on words that define her occupation, I put the question to her and using the words she used to describe her occupation I created a collage on her skin.

The group’s front woman, Thao Nguyen, pulled off equal parts cute and baddass as she tromped across the stage in her cowboy boots, headbanging her shaggy haircut like she’s possessed, while ripping it up on her enormous guitar. Thao’s on-stage charisma is contagious, and her wild, energetic style feels very San Francisco. Read more here.

Last night, the roughly 200 fans who showed up for Pro-Wrestling Revolution’s Lucha Libre fundraiser event for John O’Connell High School enjoyed three hours of brawling amongst the clear cut villains (which in last night’s case meant a very aggro trio of Border Patrol agents) and heroes (the mean, lean, well-preened Mexican fighting machines of Universidad de los Guapos) of the pro-wrestling world. Pro-Wrestling Revolution also held their very first women’s title event last night, which was taken by Mexico’s infamous Lady Apache after a gnarly chick fight with San Francisco’s own pro-wrestling champ, Alissa Flash (otherwise known as Cheerleader Melissa). Proceeds from the evening will help fund John O’Connell’s prom. Write up by Anna McCarthy

He offered a few examples over beers at the Uptown Nightclub: “Master of lies and manipulation.” “A man with blood on his hands.” “Shameless tactician.” “Lying salesman.” “Gandalf behind the scenes.” “Unconscionable, soulless asshole.” That’s only the beginning. Neutron also faults Rove for “all these wars that we’re still embroiled in, our economy being screwed, and gay marriage being used as a wedge issue.” Then there’s that “porcine face,” which, according to Neutron, resists even the softest lighting or the finest airbrushing techniques….Read More
